With the support of Temasek Foundation Nurtures, Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) has set out on a journey to implement Audio Description (AD) for live theatre performances in 2019. As part of this journey, we will work with the Access Art Hub to train 10 Audio Describers based in Singapore who can support the growth of this service into 2019 and beyond. The training will be led by a specialist team from Access2Arts who will join us from Adelaide, Australia.
What is Audio Description? Audio Description provides access to the visual elements – action, costumes, settings, scene changes, gestures, facial expressions, sight gags and other visually engaging images. This occurs in mediums such as television/ film, museum exhibitions, theatre and a variety of live events. While primarily designed for people who are blind or vision impaired, audio Description can also be assistive for people who have Autism Spectrum Disorders and people who have a print disability such as dyslexia, colour blindness and other learning difficulties.
The training: Access2Arts will offer training and professional mentorship in Audio Description. Their tutors are professional Audio Describers with experience in live arts, cultural events, theatre, film, conferences, visual arts and museums. Their Audio Describers are trained at the highest standard and supported by a programme of continuous professional development.
Training in Development & Delivery of live theatre Audio Description: The training will support participants in writing vivid and accurate audio descriptions. It will cover how to prepare scripts for delivery and recording, providing participants with the essential skills needed to write, edit and record effective audio descriptions for theatre.
