Spotlight: Dwayne Lau Returns to Bring Magic and Mischief in Charlotte’s Web

The timeless story of Charlotte’s Web that still speaks to every generation.

A decade after charming audiences as Templeton in Charlotte’s Web, Dwayne Lau returns to the stage in this beloved story. This time, he’s stepping into a lively cast of new characters. From line dancing to performing illusions (and even some boxing antics!), Dwayne shares what makes returning to this beloved story so exhilarating and why it continues to capture the hearts of audiences today.

Dwayne Lau as Gander – one of several roles he plays – and Suhaili Safari as Goose

A Decade of Charlotte’s Web

1. You were part of The Little Company’s (TLC) Charlotte’s Web in 2016, and now you’re returning to play a different set of characters. What excites you most about stepping into these new roles?

I used to play Templeton in the previous run 10 years ago! Today I step in the roles of the Narrator, The Gander, Uncle the Muscular Pig, and many others! The vast difference in the characters makes it fun and excites me most! I get to do magic, illusions, [prance around] in boxing gloves and even line dance!

Bringing Stories to Life for Young Audiences

2. You’ve done several TLC shows over the years. Share a favourite memory from one of these productions.

That would be Treasure Island! I played Long John Silver, the baddie. It was an epic show with sword fights and an entire song about making paella on stage! We would hear the audible gasps in the audience when the “Benbo Inn” at the start of the show transformed seamlessly by the end of the opening number to become a massive pirate ship!

3. What keeps you coming back to theatre for young audiences?

I love to see the faces of the children when they watch performances. They get caught up in the adventure and make believe. And I like that we as performers get to communicate important life skills and values to the kids in such fun, meaningful ways.

A Story for Everyone

4. Why do you think this story continues to resonate so strongly with families today?

It’s story about friendship and loss; kindness and loyalty. It’s filled with themes and values that we all experience in life regardless the age.

Friendship, courage, and a little farmyard magic await. Catch Dwayne Lau as he brings multiple characters to life in Charlotte’s Web.

Running now till 28 Mar 2026 at the Drama Centre Theatre, book your tickets here.
